Internet and Learning:

Read to Learn Module: Old is Gold

The internet is a huge global village. There is a wide array of platforms that offer an opportunity to learn for people of all age, religion, gender, caste, creed etc. While some companies offer their services by monetizing the system, others do it for free. Regardless, the twentieth century has given a whole new direction to the way humans learn knowledge. With just the power of internet and an insatiable hunger for knowledge, any person in this whole wide world can learn anything that they wish to.

From the likes of LinkedIn Learning, Udemy, Coursera and Udacity to Khan Academy, Codecademy, Skillshare and edX, there is absolutely no dearth for online course providers that cater to millions of users on a daily basis. Thus, comes the question – is there a need for one more online course provider? To put it simply, yes. Considering the global population and the regional limitation to subjects, no amount of learning platform can be sufficient.

Consider two scenarios – the first where you get to make choices from only a handful of options and second where you get to make choices from a plethora of options. It is but inevitable that we humans tend to opt for scenarios that have differing options because more options give us more range of personalisation, thus easing the effort of selection process. The same thought process can be applied here as well.

Reading vs Listening:

Reading Vs Listening

A brief glance into the history of human evolution provides us an insight into how we have evolved with the sharing of possession of knowledge from one generation. The learning system has mostly consisted of four methods namely reading, writing, listening and speaking. Despite the technological inventions and innovations, 21st century has still not seen a complete wipe out of the fourconventional methods. We still rely on the passing on of the knowledge via conventional methods, thanks to its effectiveness over centuries.

But can learning just be relied entirely upon any two of the four conventional methods? Time and again, it has proved to be true, although the inclusion of the other two helps accelerate the process. So, which ranks higher? Reading and writing or listening and speaking? There have been many scientific researches made so far in this regard but none have been able to prove anything concrete so far. Then why is it that various online learning platforms choose to opt for either reading based modules or listening based modules? The basic answer would be the feasibility and accessibility to the end user. However, there are a few very successful online learning platforms that adopt all four conventional methods.
